We were fortunate to come across a discussion containing high praise for a tour company called Chaska Tours ( We worked with Pieter and Rocio Valcarcel. (Pieter is actually Dutch, but he speaks and e-mails in excellent English.) They put together an excellent itinerary (at the last minute and during high season in mid-August) with all private, selected guides during our entire trip.

Introduction Amazon
Hacienda Concepcion is located in an enchanting and serene lush setting within 819 hectares of natural rain forests that act as a buffer zone between the Tambopata National Park and the right shore of the vast Madre de Dios river. The lodge seeks to cater to the nature loving enthusiast that come to the Madre de Dios region in search of a unique immersion with the Amazon jungle but are more conscious of time and budgetary constraints. Hacienda Concepcion is located at only 8 kilo- meters or 20 minutes down the river on dug-out canoe from the town of Puerto Maldonado, built on the grounds of and old Catholic mission which established the Hacienda in the fifties.
This lovely and tranquil setting is home to a unique and history filled property that is being restored with the highest level of respect to the local biodiversity. The original mission structure boasts a large structure with open verandas surrounding the house that overlooks the natural “cocha” or lagoon in front of the building. Inside, the main house boasts high ceilings with hand woven natural palm thatched roofs, a dining room and seating areas that have been carefully decorated with welcoming and comfortable furniture from the area. The lodge offers 8 twin rooms in the main house and 7 individual cabanas; all built in the style of the traditional Ese Eja indigenous local communities. All the rooms in the main house have direct views in to the forest and are secured by mosquito nets covering all windows, ceilings and beds as well as electricity, hot water and ceiling fans. The individual cabanas are ample buildings that have: covered porches, separate bathrooms, with hot water, twin beds (can be converted to king) and a beautiful view over the lagoon.
