Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Intro & photos
Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Our adventure will start with an early morning transfer from your hotel to the train station of Poroy where we will board our train to Machupicchu, our journey will take approximately  three-hours and it has been described as one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world. The train leaves Cusco through a high plateau before following the Urubamba River down into the last portion of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, just before reaching the town of Ollantaytambo, where we get deep into the narrow Urubamba gorge surrounded by sheer mountains and thick forest.  At Km. 104 we will star our one day-hike through spectacular flora arriving at Machu Picchu via the famous Sungate.

Day by day
  • Day 1: Cusco - Km 104 - Machupicchu

We will pick you up early in the morning for our transfer to Poroy train station (25 minutes outside Cusco). We board our train which takes us through the beautiful landscapes leading to the national park of Machu Picchu. We disembark at Km 104 and begin our walk by crossing the Vilcanota / Urubamba River where we enter the Sacred Inca trail (Make sure you have your passports and ISIC cards in case you are students). We will start climbing away from the river, first visiting the Inca ruins of Chachabamba and then entering to a shaded forest. On emerging from the forest we continue with a long walk in open, sun-scorched grasslands before returning to the protection of some shaded forests where we will stop for a moment near a beautiful waterfall. After another hard ascent we reach Wiñaywayna which is a beautiful ceremonial site divided into two sectors and fashioned from finely-carved stones fitted together with great precision. Here we will have time to rest, explore and have our box lunches. We now enter the cloud forest where the Amazon jungle meets the Andes, passing through abundant vegetation which is home to hundreds of bird and orchid species making our way to the Sun Gate where we will get our first views of Machupicchu. Here, the final stretch of the royal Inca highway will take us to the citadel itself, covered for four centuries by forest and now laid out for our appreciation. From the Sanctuary, we will take the bus to the town of Machu Picchu where we will have time to relax after the hike . Here we spend the night at our hotel.

  • Day 2: Tour of Machu Picchu - Return to Cusco

This morning, after breakfast your guide will accompany you for an early bus to the ruins for the sunrise at Machu Picchu. The first buses start leaving at 5.30am and take 30 minutes to get to the site. The doors to Macchu Picchu open at 6 a.m. , here you will be able to enjoy this magnificent place before the crowds arrive later in the morning. Our professional guide will slowly show you around the main areas recounting myths and legends passed down over the centuries and explaining about some of the advanced building techniques the Incas used. After your tour you will have plenty of time (3 hours approx) to look around maybe do some of the other treks which are available in the surrounding mountains. At about 1.30 pm it will be time to head back down to the town by bus. Here you can find many restaurants offering lunch and at a convenient time you will board the return train to Poroy station, then we will transfer you back to Cusco arriving at approximately 8.30 pm.
