Pre-inca cultures of North Peru

The rarely-visited north of Peru is an incredible area to explore, beautiful and full of history, with archaeology dating from pre-Inca times (between 100 and 1500 AD). The pre-inca cultures of the Chachapoyas in the north made significant achievements building great cities, fortresses, tombs and temples. This tour will take you through many distinct and contrasting areas of Peru, from the dry coastal desert, the Andean mysterious cloud forest or eyebrow of the Amazon, to the high Andean valleys of Cusco surrounded by snowcapped peaks. A travel through time and the history of Peru with the awe-inspiring climax of the secret citatel of Machu Picchu.

International flight arrival in Lima. On arrival to Lima we will be waiting at the airport to transfer you to your hotel in the exclusive district of Miraflores.

Lima was founded on January 18, 1535 by the conqueror Francisco Pizarro and was considered, for almost three centuries, as the Vice-Royal Capital of South America. This fantastic city is nowadays an immeasurable mix of cultures, ethnicities, races and bloods. A festival of colors and customs, an immense wealth of folklore and Creole, between the ancient and the modern.

You will have the morning at leisure, you can explore the Malecon of Miraflores and enjoy the beautiful oceans view, also Lima has been considered Latin America‘s Gastronomic Capital and it’s the location for a great number of restaurants that top the World’s 50 Best Restaurants where you can have multiple options for lunch.

In the afternoon we will pick you up from your hotel for your tour: enjoy a visit to the Larco Herrera and National museums of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Lima.

The Larco Herrera Museum showcases remarkable chronological galleries providing an excellent overview of 3000 years of development of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. It features the finest gold and silver collection from the Ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions.

The National museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History is Peru’s biggest museum and houses the «Estela Raymondi» and the «Tello Obelisk» monuments, two important carved stone pieces dating back to the Formative period 1000 years B.C. It features the largest textile collection, with fabrics from the Pre-Ceramic period through the Inca Empire, and a major collection of Ancient Peruvian metals.

Today we will have a full day excursion to Caral. This ancient city is an exceptional testimony of the Caral civilization, the oldest in the Americas, developed five thousand years ago, almost simultaneously with those of Mesopotamia, Egypt and India.

It is a unique laboratory in the Americas, because of its great age, for research into the formation of the State; the urban way of life; social distinction and hierarchies, the roles of trade and the importance of religion in the social organization; aspects that can be compared with the other centers of civilization in the Americas and in the world with which it was contemporary.UNESCO delegated Caral as a world heritage in 2009.
It is located 190 km (120 miles) north of Lima in a lush valley. Its stone pyramids, plazas and residential buildings spreads out over 150 acres of desert.

Morning transfer to the airport for your Flight Lima/Trujillo. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel.

Once checked in you will be off for your day excursion:
We will head south of town to visit the temples of the Sun and the Moon built by the Moche Culture around 500 AD. These 130-feet-tall pyramids are thought to be the largest adobe structures in the Americas.

We continue to visit the beach town Huanchaco, where fishermen have fished with reed boats called Caballitos De Totora, made since pre-Inca times. With time for a delicious lunch and to relax on the beach, we then visit Chan Chan, the capital de Chimú dynasty (1200 a 1470 AC) and the largest mud clay city of America, the excursion takes you to the impressive royal palace built by the Chimu culture in the pre-inca period.

Return to your hotel.

Note: In private service it is possible to add the Trujillo City Tour which includes the Casa Urquiaga, Palacio Iturriagui, Casa de la Emancipacion and La Merced Church, then visit the grand central plaza and walk around the streets lined with colonial mansions. Today we will leave for the Chicama valley covered by the green of the sugar cane plantations. We arrive at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex and visit the Huaca Cao, the place where the remains of the Lady of Cao were discovered. The temple preserves in the Ceremonial Plaza the reliefs that represent the prisoners with a rope around their necks, officiants and spiders. Inside the temple, the murals that show the design of the peace cat or life and the manta rays stand out. In the Cao Museum, the mummy of the Lady of Cao is preserved, as well as her jewels: necklaces, earrings, nose rings and crowns.

Return to Trujillo and in the afternoon, you will board your Bus to Chiclayo, arriving at the evening. Upon your arrival we will transfer you to your hotel.

Note: In Private Service you will travel by private car to Chiclayo, en route you will visit El Brujo Archaeological Complex and visit the Huaca Cao.
In the afternoon visit the Bruning museum which exhibits cultural assets that explain the chronological sequence of the cultural development of Peru, with representative ceramics of the cultures of the region, highlighting objects from the Mochica and Lambayeque cultures.

Overnight in Chiclayo.

In the morning we will travel to the town of Lambayaque to visit Huaca Rajada, a Moche pyramid and the place chosen to safeguard the remains of The Lord of Sipan. The Lord ruled around 200 AD over the Moche culture, and his gold-laden tomb is considered to be the richest in the Americas.
At Huaca Rajada an exact replica of the tomb can be seen, revealing the complex funerary rites employed by Moche culture, and their belief in an afterlife.

Then you will visit the *Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, that exhibits the most important archaeological remains of the Mochica Culture, in an exceptional exhibition that combines maximum scientific accuracy, security and enjoyment to show the jewels, emblems and ornaments found in 1987 in the tomb of the Lord of Sipán. The Lord of Sipan was adorned with remarkable jewelry fashioned from gold, silver, turquoise and Spondylus shell, and he was accompanied by women, children and warriors. *The museum is closed on Mondays.

After lunch, we will visit the 26 pre-Columbian pyramids of Tucume. These pyramids were excavated by Thor Heyerdahl (of Kon-tiki fame), who discovered 102 burial sites, textiles, Incan figurines and depictions of reed boats. These items, along with goods from far-flung corners of the South America, allowed Heyerdahl to prove that the ancient people of Tucume were experienced voyagers and traders.

At around 20:00 we will transfer you to the bus terminal to board the night bus to Chachapoyas (10 hours).

Upon arrival our representative will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel. You will have this day at your leisure to explore Chachapoyas on your own. Places of interest around the city are the Plaza de Armas and the Casona Monsante, considered a historical monument of the XIX Century and Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

Note: In Private Service today you can have a Private car from Chiclayo to Chachapoyas. Here you will cross four different Peruvian departments: Lambayeque, the South of Piura, the North of Cajamarca and finally Amazonas. This drive starts in the coast and arrives to the cloud-forest of Chachapoyas. Notice that this is a full day trip of 10 hours until we reach Chachapoyas.

After breakfast you will enjoy an excursion on horse to visit the colorful funeral buildings of Revash perched on a ledge up high on a cliff. They overlook a valley and a tributary of the Utcubamba, near the town of Santo Tomas. The Cliff walls at Revash are decorated with geometric designs and figures of camelids. Some of the tombs are decorated with T and a cross-shaped niches.

After lunch, you will continue to the town of Leymebamba to visit an amazing collection of well-preserved pre-inca mummies discovered in the «Laguna de los Condores».

After breakfast you will visit Kuelap, a spectacular pre-Inca walled city hidden atop of a precipitous mountain. Although Kuelap was discovered 60 years before Machu Picchu, it is not as well known to the outside world.

Nevertheless recent amazing discoveries in the nearby areas to Kuelap have captured the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies.

Today you will hike to Cocachimba, a paradise in the middle of the jungle that houses different waterfalls, including Gocta, one of the highest waterfalls in the world. Walk along a beautiful route full of vegetation and wild animals. You will enjoy wonderful views and the imposing waterfall where the strength of the water and the pleasant sensation of the dew will renew you.

Transfer by road from Chachapoyas to the airport of Jaen for your flights Jaen/Lima/Cusco.

You will high up in the Peruvian Andes to Cusco, once the capital of the Incas Empire where you will learn more about the Andean culture as the city itself represents the center of indigenous Quechua culture.
On arrival in Cusco you will be transferred to your hotel. Free time to get adjusted to the altitude and to acclimatize.

You will have the morning free to explore on your own and in the afternoon, you will have your City Tour.

First, we will visit the Cathedral of Cusco on the Plaza de Armas and continuously the temple of Qoricancha, also known as the temple of the Sun. After these visits, we will continue to the upper part of Cusco to visit several archaeological sites. The first stop will be at Sacsayhuaman, a ceremonial complex of the Incas. We will also visit Qenqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. At the end, we will return to Cusco and drop you off at your hotel.

Note: In private service you will first have a tour by foot through the city, visiting Qoricancha the Inca Sun Temple, the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral, enjoying the atmosphere of the city by observing the well-preserved colonial architecture that conserves Incas original stone walls, evidence of a rich and complex history. We will continue our way until we get to San Pedro Central Market where the locals shop for Andean grains, fruits, natural medicine plants and more. Afterwards, drive up above Cusco for a visit of the spectacular Sacsayhuaman Inca complex with stupendous stonework, Qenko a place of rituals and then we will visit the Textile Art Museum of Sulca to see their lovely textile made by hand.

Return to your hotel. Rest of the day at your leisure.

Overnight in Cusco

This will be a full day tour where you will enjoy the varied landscapes of the beautiful Río Urubamba Valley, known as “Valle Sagrado de los Incas”, along the way we can see attractive colonial towns and isolated villages of indigenous communities that continue their tradition for weaving, pottery and agriculture. Main attractions will be the handicraft markets and the lofty Inca citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, it is definitely the perfect match between a cultural experience, the andean sunlight and delicious typical food.

We will visit first the famous Pisac Colorful Indian market to see the handicrafts and taste delicious empanadas baked in huge typical ovens. Afterwards, continue to the Pisac ruins above the town for a visit of the Sun Temple and admire the many surrounding terraces. We will continue to Urubamba to enjoy lunch, then off to one of the original Inca towns of Ollantaytambo to be amazed by the ruins that sit in front of the quaint town. After a wonderful day you will return to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the night.

Overnight in Sacred Valley

This morning you will ride on the train from Ollantaytambo with breathtaking views to Aguas Calientes. You will check into your hotel and then take the bus to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

In your way up to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu you will have spectacular views from the Mountains and the typical flora and fauna of the mysterious Cloud Forest. It is highly recommended to have lunch in Sanctuary Lodge Restaurant located in the entrance of the Citadel, enjoying the atmosphere of this magical place and then have a quiet guided tour after noon, with less crowds and the chance to see the amazing sunrise.

With your Official guide you will visit the enigmatic Citadel of Machu Picchu following a specific route where you will walk through the different sectors such as the Urban and Ceremonial and other places of interest. You will also have time for taking memorable pictures. We are sure that this will be a unique experience!

The Citadel of Machu Picchu was declared by UNESCO a world heritage in 1983. It is believed to have been built in the 15th century and abandoned by the Inca Empire when the Spaniards conquered them. The locals always knew about the ruins and some locals lived around it. The ruins were brought to the world’s attention in 1911. Visit the Sun Temple, the Room of the Three Windows, the Royalty sector and more.

Note: New regulations have been stablished for the visit to Machu Picchu since 2019, according to these statements there are certain schedules for the visit, with the Machu Picchu ticket you can stay 4 hours as maximum in the Citadel. Please notice that Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 am to 5:30pm. aumentar

Today you will have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own pace.

You have the option to return to Machu Picchu Sanctuary and explore the site for a second time with a private guide or you can choose to visit the waterfalls of Mandor. Optionally you can choose to climb one of the Mountains in Machu Picchu: Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain Peak:

These short treks inside the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu will make your day spectacular! You will hike up through Inca’s original paths that will lead you towards magical places within the Cloud Forest. With every step you will get fascinated by the beautiful views of the famous Andean Mountains. You can have a taste of the real Inca Trail doing this trek and appreciate the architectonic magnificence of the Incas. You have to see it with your own eyes!

If you are staying at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel (4 stars category), you can opt to do one of the various excursions on the hotel grounds which include bird-watching, orchid and nature hikes with specialist guides as the Hotel is located inside the cloud forest, also you can enjoy the Unu Spa, characterized by a mystical Andean approach. The natural products are derived from local botanical extracts (mint, eucalyptus and orchids), offering a spiritual, sensual and relaxing experience.

Please make sure you check out of your hotel before you leave for the Sanctuary and to pick up your luggage and to be at the train station half an hour before your train’s departure.
Return to Aguas Calientes and enjoy lunch on your own. Then board your train to the Poroy or Ollantaytambo station. Private transfer to your hotel in Cusco.

Note: Tickets are subject to availability. There are schedules for the visit to one of the Mountains, with the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu tickets you can stay inside the Park for 6 hours and with the Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain Peak ticket for 7 hours maximum. The visit for one of the mountains has a moderate grading that requires a good physical condition although effort is well worth it. The Huayna Picchu hike is easier and takes less time than Machu Picchu Mountain Peak.

Overnight in Cusco

It is time to say goodbye to Cusco, at a scheduled time, we will transfer you to Cusco airport for your flight to Lima. On arrival to Lima our representative will meet you from the exit gate, it is advisable that you go straight over to leave your luggage in the airport storage.Then you will be transferred to the drop off/pick up point in Miraflores in front of the Marriott Hotel. You will have free time for lunch.

In the early afternoon you will be picked up from in the drop off/Pick up point in front of the Marriott hotel for your guided Lima city tour in group service. We first visit Lima’s Historical Center, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, and a Cultural Patrimony in 1991.
We will visit the colonial sites of the Plaza Mayor, the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral, the Archibishop’s Palace. Right after we visit the San Francisco Monastery and Catacombs. We continue to modern section and visit the suburbs of San Isidro and Miraflores. On our way we will pass by the Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Inca pyramid shaped temple.

Then we will visit the Parque del Amor (Lovers Park) and enjoy refreshing views of the Pacific Ocean as we drive down to the Miraflores Malecon, a road overlooking the ocean. At the end of the tour you will be dropped back to Marriott Hotel were you have free time until your evening scheduled transfer to return to the airport for your international flight.
